Long Beach Airport Upgrades to First Class Lighting with Noribachi’s Smart Energy LED Solutions by Alishusuh123
Noribachi, a leader in defining informed grid interaction with smart energy products, retrofits outdoor perimeter and walkway lights as well as indoor office lighting at Long Beach Airport in Long Beach, CA.
Noribachi upgraded 75 lights at the airport, replacing metal halide and fluorescent bulbs with ultra-efficient LED bulbs. The new lights offer brighter illumination while requiring approximately 80% less energy, and drastically reduce facility maintenance expenses.
“These LEDs will greatly contribute to our sustainability initiatives as Long Beach Airport endeavors to become one of the greenest airports in the nation,” said Airport Director Mario Rodriguez. “The quality of the LEDs is excellent.”
For their perimeter area and walkway lighting Long Beach Airport worked with Noribachi to select ideal replacements from Noribachi’s Custom LED bulb line, which utilizes a proprietary modular geometry to craft lighting that perfectly satisfies the lighting demands of the application as well as accommodates the existing fixture.

The perimeter LED lighting also brings the added benefit of reduced maintenance. Noribachi’s five year warranty, coupled with LED’s incomparable 50,000+ hour lifetime, ensures that the hassles of frequent bulb changes all but fade from facility managers’ minds.
“We selected the Noribachi bulbs for their longer life and reduced maintenance costs,” noted Fred Pena, Facilities Management Officer. “The illumination also greatly enhances security and safety for passengers.”
Noribachi further helped Long Beach Airport improve its facility and reduce its energy bill through the installation of hex.1 LED walkway lighting. Previous walkway lights had drained between 75W and 125W while the new Noribachi LED bulbs only require 22W of power. Additionally, the increase in bulb lifetime that accompanies a Noribachi LED retrofit allows the critically important walkway lights to remain on, keeping travelers safer and more comfortable.
“People are starting to talk about LEDs for general lighting for indoors,” Maryrose Sylvester, who was appointed head of the lighting unit in March, said in an interview in New York. “By 2020, about 70 to 80 percent of the general lighting market is going to be enabled by LEDs.”
Siemens AG’s Osram unit and Royal Philips NA, GE’s traditional rivals, have both predicted similar growth rates as new regulations combine with declining LED prices to make the lighting systems more attractive to individual and commercial buyers.
To take advantage of that, GE’s lighting unit has doubled its research and development spending on LED technology over the past five years, Sylvester said without providing a specific figure.
Munich-based Siemens is expecting the market to grow to $13 billion (about 9.8 billion euros) by 2013 and rise another 44 percent by 2016. Philips, based in Amsterdam, predicted in September that 45 percent of the market will be LED-based by 2015.
Because LED systems are more expensive on the front end, demonstrating to customers how the investment pays off with lower maintenance costs and energy savings is critical, Sylvester said.
